The AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification course teaches healthcare professionals how to recognize life-threatening emergencies and provide high-quality CPR, early defibrillation, and effective team-based resuscitation. It is required for medical providers such as nurses, physicians, EMTs, paramedics, dentists, therapists, and students entering healthcare programs.
Participants learn adult, child, and infant CPR, proper use of an AED, effective ventilation techniques, and how to relieve choking. The course also emphasizes team dynamics, high-performance CPR, and updated resuscitation guidelines. Students practice hands-on skills with feedback-equipped manikins to ensure competency and confidence.
The traditional instructor-led BLS course typically takes approximately 3–4 hours, depending on class size and skill level. The certification is valid for two years. Renewal courses are shorter and designed for those with a current or recently expired BLS card.
The AHA BLS Provider Course meets official medical employment and hospital credentialing requirements, combining evidence-based training with hands-on skills practice and testing. Many online-only CPR programs are not accepted by hospitals because they lack live skills testing. AHA BLS certification remains the gold standard in healthcare.
